Over the course of a month my mentorship knowledge has grown. From not really knowing everyone on the floor to greeting everyone with a smile. My mentorship has expanded my knowledge about neurology because I have meet a doctor from Emory. He is very passionate about his work and have read the notes he writes about patients and how in detail he is to help them.

My Advance Placement Biology has helped me expand my knowledge of how the brain works. And how genes impact people directly from birth or impact the kids. I understood how genes combine and mix together to get the result of down syndrome.

My profile: I am Maryana, I love taking science and math classes. I also enjoy playing in the concert and marching band, and playing soccer. Its as though you will either see me performing on the field or kicking a ball on the field. 

I am participating in the Honors Mentorship Program, which I have enjoyed thus far. I came into the field of neurology because I found it quite interesting how the brain functions and how people get diseases to the brain such as Alzheimer's disease.

My mentorship: My current mentorship is at Children's with Special Needs clinic with Mrs Angie Williams. I am very fortunate to be a part of this system because I feel very involved and Mrs. Williams has opened my mind to different possible careers such as genetics. During my mentorship I get to examine different files and discuss their situation with others. Aside from paper work I did get a chance to meet the neurologist doctor Mr Morris. Who in turn gave me some good advice for my future steps towards my career.

My future: I, hopefully, will get to continue this wonderful program my last year in high school. After that I will go to Georgia state university neurology program with which I will have a better understanding of the situation and will be one step ahead thanks to the mentorship program.

10-16 HMP

I am fairly recent to my internship so my perception still remains about the same but I do hope as time goes on that my knowledge will expand even further and that I'll have a whole new outlook when I am finished.

What is surprising to me about the mentorship is how fat the patients come from. Some come all the way down from some side of the state to a well sized clinic to see a neurologist or geneticist for a couple of hours in search of hope. Another thing that surprised me is the amount of data one patient can have. Some have only on folder while the other has 8 folders full of doctor notes.

I have however learned that organizing the notes and referrals from oldest to newest will help the doctor big time. And even though this is a basic or boring routine , this saves so much time for the doctor when the patient comes for their appointment.

My mentor has been a partner in my education by allowing me to experience my career at hand. She has given me the necessary information and continues to provide me with information that influences my opinion about my possible careers.

During one day, she was telling that they hired a new nurse. She then told me the requirements needed to hold a job at the facility and the steps needed. This really had me thinking about the variety of opportunities available to work there, from a registered nurse to a geneticist. I was set for a neurologist career way, but the more she talks about genetics the more I become interested in that career way.

Aside from the this I learned about the regular routine from the very nice recipient lady. She was very sweet to me since the first day and was very excited to see a student interested in the field of genetics. She taught me to sign in in the front and where everything is located at.

Week 9/29

My mentor has gave me so much to think about this whole. We went over the procedures, which are not much. All I have to do is check in the front office. Aside from our procedures, my mentor showed me the computer system and how to use it locate the patient information. My mentor ha made me feel as if I am part of the work area, and I know that if i have second guess of anything that i can communicate with anyone in charge. The employees in the work area said they interact with patients often and they look nice and professional, although some say they just wear scrubs when needed. I feel very welcomed because everyone has showed me a little bit of everything in where they work at. For example they put me to work with computer system in which I feel fairly comfortable because our generation is the generation of technology.

What I envision to get from my mentor is a fun and active experience that will help me get a better knowledge of my future career. I will make sure to follow the rules, be friendly and active ( ask a lot of questions) to ensure i receive full knowledge and experience of my mentor ship experience. Because of my mentor ship I know this will help me achieve my career in the future because I will have a heads up of what is expected in my career.  

3 Key points in both the recording and handout are to smile, because no one wants to be around a negative Nancy, always be on time espically the first few months of the mentor ship because that sets out an example of your actions in the future, and finally ask questions! Asking questions is important for you to get knowledge and understanding of the situation you are involved in.
